Solid state reduction of iron oxide pellets and fines using hydrogen-rich gas mixtures is a key pathway toward green steelmaking. Our pilot programme at the Durgapur facility has demonstrated reduction of iron ore pellets to metallic iron (metallisation >92%) at temperatures below 1000°C using H₂-N₂ gas blends. This eliminates the need for coke-based reductants and reduces CO₂ emissions by up to 70% compared to BF-BOF routes. Current work focuses on scaling the reactor design and optimising gas circulation economics.
